First Post

I'm Canaan Merchant, I grew up in Powhatan (PHS '05) and so did my parents. Growing up, my life was defined by the fact that Powhatan was simultaneously a part and apart from the metro Richmond community. People complained about lack of options about things to do but also complained that Powhatan was becoming too suburban like Midlothian and Chesterfield to the east. I no longer live in Powhatan and frankly I'd rather live in a city but I understand people's frustrations at the fact Powhatan is losing its rural character. I started this to sound out some of my ideas for Powhatan grow while still retaining the rural-ness while its population grows.
If population increase is inevitable (and all indicators show that it is) then there has to be a way to preserve at least some of Powhatan's small town charm. Change doesn't have to be bad and hopefully I can start some discussion that will talk about different ways to improve all the things that people love about Powhatan.
I by no means think I have the answers, and I doubt that I'm the best advocate for it. I don't really have any plans to move back to Powhatan after graduating college but nonetheless I started this after thinking about my parents their friends, and my friends who still live or have roots in Powhatan and what they were saying about the changes so I started this so I can let out some of my ideas and have some discussion on it. Enjoy.
